02. October 2017.   OCTOBER - Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October

BREAST CANCER - EPIDEMIOLOGICAL DATA

Compared to the average registered rate of incidence of malignant breast tumors in the Republic of Serbia in 2014 (54.3 per 100,000), a slightly higher rate was registered in Vojvodina (64.3 / 100.000) compared to central Serbia, where the registered rate amounted to 53.6 / 100.000 women. The standardized mortality rate in the same year was 19.7 per 100,000 women. The above data are non-published data obtained for the entire territory of the Republic of Serbia.

During 2014, there was an increase in the age-specific illness of women aged 40, with the highest rates of incidence being recorded in the eldest female population aged 60 to 74.

When we talk about malignant breast tumor related deaths, there is a slight increase from the age of 45, but the highest rates of mortality are in the 60-69 age bracket.

Unfortunately, high rates of incidence for ages  60 to 69 (209.5 / 100.000) follow the same age and high rates of mortality (85.1 / 100.000), which most likely is a result of late reporting of women of this age for preventive examinations, when the malignant disease is already in an advanced stage, where distant metastases are present in surrounding organs.

When we talk about breast cancer, according to Globocan estimates from 2012, Serbia takes place somewhere in the middle with most of the countries of the former Western Balkan region (Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro), with somewhat a lower risk of breast cancer in Europe.

However, when we speak of breast cancer related deaths breast, Globocan estimates that women in Serbia, right after Macedonian women, are at high risk of dying from breast cancer compared to other female females in Europe.

UNDERTAKEN MEASURES IN THE HEALTHCARE PROTECTION SYSTEM FOR 2012 ON THE TERRITORY OF THE REPUBLIC OF SERBIA

A program of organized breast cancer screening was gradually introduced. The screening method is mammography. The target population are women aged 50-69 years of age.

On the territory of the Republic of Serbia, currently organized breast cancer screening is carried out in 36 municipalities (in which over 600,000 women are targeted by population).
